December Superstar- Lauren Kirschner

Metabolic health and wellness, in general, involve many moving pieces; everything has to be working together. As we discussed in our main article, it takes all six lifestyle essentials to manage your metabolic health. Our Super Star, Lauren, implements all lifestyle essentials into her routines. Sometimes it comes naturally to her, while other times, she has to work a little harder on it. Learn how Lauren uses balanced nutrition, optimized exercise, stress/sleep management, mindset/vision, education, and community as she 'pro-ages' and manages her metabolic health.

Meet Lauren

Lauren joined Sphericality and then The Limitless Lifestyle Academy because she wanted to hear herself the best chance to find herself in a healthy place as she approached her 50's. It was essential to her to have the energy and strength to keep up with her teenage kids and be fit for herself as she got older.

"It's hard to pinpoint one favorite part of the programs because it's all so great. The instructors know exercise and nutrition, the positivity in the classes gives you the motivation to keep going, and Sphericality is always looking for new ways to improve your wellbeing!"

Lauren said when asked what her favorite part of the program was.

 Optimized Exercise

You can see Lauren exercising anywhere between 4 and 6 days a week at the studio.

"I was always fortunate that I didn't struggle with weight; however that doesn't mean you're in shape. That was me for sure!! Exercise is now a part of my life for maybe the first time. I mean, I worked out, but it was never part of my daily life, if that makes sense. I've made a lifestyle change since joining Sphericality. Exercise now makes me not only physically stronger but mentally stronger. I have gained muscle and lost fat; my sugar levels have improved, and I have more energy."

Building muscle is imperative for boosting our metabolism; muscle mass needs more energy, burning more calories. Also, as we age, we lose muscle mass, which will slow down our metabolism. This is why it's crucial to continue to exercise as you age. Since she started, we've seen her form, endurance and strength improve.

Flexible Lifestyle Nutrition

"I like food, but I've learned better balance," Lauren said that she has always considered herself a healthy eater. She was always a veggie lover but didn't know how much our bodies needed them until she attended our Food Camp sessions. She stays away from fried food and eats sweets in moderation, but she doesn't restrict herself. Lean proteins with plenty of veggies are something she incorporates every day; salads with chicken or seafood are her go-tos. Eating a lot of veggies is great, but it's also important to get those veggies with a lot of fiber, such as artichokes, carrots, and sweet potatoes. The fiber will help keep blood sugar low and keep your digestive system working right.

 Sleep & Stress

Sleep is so vital to our overall wellness, but it's elusive and something they have to work on for some people.

"I'm a sleeper, so I know I need a good 8 hours a night." As Lauren gets older, she finds it's harder to achieve solid sleep, but she stays focused on getting to bed at an early hour and getting up at the same time daily.

Having a healthy sleep schedule is important for a good night's rest and our sleep hygiene as a whole. Studies have shown that sleep deprivation can alter the glucose metabolism and hormones involved in regulating metabolism, that is, decreased leptin levels and increased ghrelin levels. In addition to sleeping, managing stress is also essential. "I find that doing yoga if I'm feeling a bit extra stressed help and an occasional glass of wine is not out of the question."

 Mindset, Purpose, & Vision

Lauren's WHY is a great one, and she makes some valid points about aging and staying active.

"Overall wellness is more important than ever to me. I want to stay active as I get older. The saying a body in motion stays in motion is always on my mind. We all know people older than us who are in bad shape or good shape. I always think, what if they paid more attention to their health when they were younger. Maybe they'd be able to get around a lot better in their 70's if they did. There's no guarantee in life, but I want to put myself in the best position I can as I get older, not only for myself but for my family. I want to be the grandma running around with my grandkids!! That's what keeps me going, and looking good is a nice motivator too!!"

This is a powerful way that will continue to keep her motivated because it comes from somewhere more profound than just wanting to lose weight to wear a bathing suit. Metabolic wellness must be for life. You cannot fix your metabolism in 3 months and continue on with your life. It takes practice and tenacity; without a strong reason for being healthy, you'll continue to fall on and off the wagon while your health fluctuates.

 Understanding Your Body

Lauren enjoys learning about foods that fuel our bodies, and she tries to incorporate them into our meals.

"My kids are all athletes at various levels, so I learn from them as well as the Limitless lifestyle team." Lauren knows there are always new ways to challenge your body and mind to become stronger. "It's not always easy, and I definitely lose track at times, but now I know I can reset and get back on track!!"

Science and nutrition are ever-changing. Being aware of fitness trends or new research is always helpful. The more we learn about our bodies, the more we can be prepared as changes happen to our health and our bodies. We can quickly switch gears and add what we need to our routines to stay on the healthy path.

Community & Legacy

When asked about the importance of community, Lauren said it best herself.

"The community at Sphericality and The Academy might be the best part now that I've been talking. I've met the most amazing women of all ages, lifestyles, and health positions. EVERYONE is there to support each other every day. I look forward to walking into the studio every day to chat before the hard work begins. It's another motivator I personally need. The class atmosphere is what I need because I feed off of everyone's energy. I now have a new great group of friends, and I'm in better shape, better health, and wellbeing. I LOVE Sphericality and all it has to offer!!!!"

Being in a community of women to help support you as you work towards your healthy life goals is always important. Find a community that will do that for you.
